Google's 2026 guidance is a useful reset. It confirms that its generative search experiences—AI Overviews and AI Mode—are grounded in the same Search index and quality systems that support ordinary results. Retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out change how a response is assembled, but they do not replace the need for crawlable, helpful and trustworthy pages.

That does not make AI visibility unimportant. It makes the work more disciplined. The best response is to remove unsupported tactics from the roadmap and reinvest in assets that help both people and machines.

Myth 1: You Need llms.txt to Appear in Google AI Results

Google states that it does not use llms.txt for Search, including generative AI features. An llms.txt file will neither improve nor harm Google visibility.

That is a narrower statement than “llms.txt is useless”. A maintained file can still provide a clean map of preferred resources to systems or people that choose to read it. It can also force a business to decide which pages are genuinely authoritative. But it is documentation, not a Google ranking shortcut.

What to do instead: make sure important pages are linked through ordinary HTML, included in the XML sitemap, indexable and useful without requiring a crawler to interpret a separate file.

Myth 2: There Is Special AI Schema You Must Install

There is no recognised “GEO schema” that unlocks AI Overviews. Adding invented properties or marking up content that users cannot see creates noise and can breach structured-data guidelines.

Schema still matters when used honestly. Organisation, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, Breadcrumb and other supported types can clarify what a page represents and support rich-result eligibility. The rule is simple: describe the visible page accurately and validate the result.

Myth 3: Every Answer Must Be Broken into Tiny Chunks

Google explicitly says there is no requirement to divide an article into artificially small pieces. Its systems can understand multiple topics and retrieve relevant passages from normal prose.

Structure still helps readers. Clear headings, short introductions, descriptive tables and direct answers make an article easier to scan. The difference is intent: organise for comprehension, not because someone claimed a 40-word paragraph is a hidden ranking signal.

Myth 4: You Need Hundreds of Fan-Out Pages

Query fan-out means an AI system can issue several related searches to answer one complex question. It does not mean a website should manufacture one thin page for every imaginable variation.

Google warns that scaled pages created primarily to manipulate rankings can violate spam policies. A stronger approach is to build one authoritative resource around a real customer task, then create supporting pages only where each page has a distinct purpose and useful depth.

Myth 5: Rewriting Everything in “AI-Friendly” Language Helps

Search systems understand synonyms, context and natural language. Repeating a question in five forms or flattening an expert explanation into robotic answer blocks is unnecessary.

Write in the language your customer understands. Lead with the conclusion when the reader needs a quick decision, but retain the evidence, qualifications and practical detail that make the page worth citing.

This is especially important now that commodity summaries are easy to generate. Your advantage is not sounding like a model. It is contributing experience a model cannot invent: what failed, what changed, how you measured it and which constraints affected the result.

Myth 6: More Mentions Always Mean More AI Visibility

Manufactured mentions are not authority. Google advises against inauthentic attempts to seed references across blogs, forums and videos.

Earned corroboration is different. Reviews, editorial coverage, partner listings, professional profiles and relevant citations can help customers—and platforms—verify that the same organisation exists across the web. The objective is consistency and genuine reputation, not raw mention volume.

Myth 7: Traditional SEO No Longer Matters

This is the most expensive myth. Google says foundational SEO remains the basis of generative search visibility. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before it can be shown in Google's generative features.

That makes the following work non-negotiable:

  • crawlable links and sensible site architecture
  • clear canonical URLs and controlled duplicates
  • useful page titles and descriptions
  • fast, accessible pages on mobile and desktop
  • accurate business, product and local information
  • original content that adds knowledge rather than paraphrasing it
  • Search Console monitoring for indexing and performance issues

What Actually Improves AI Visibility

Start with four layers.

1. Technical eligibility. Confirm that the page can be crawled, rendered, indexed and served with a snippet. Check robots rules, noindex directives, canonicals, internal links and sitemap coverage.

2. Non-commodity information. Publish first-hand processes, original examples, real comparisons and clearly sourced facts. A page needs a reason to exist beyond summarising other pages.

3. Entity consistency. Keep your business name, services, people, contact information and profiles consistent across your website and trusted external sources. Use appropriate structured data, without assuming it guarantees a citation.

4. Measurement. Use Search Console's generative AI reporting where available, referral data in analytics and a repeatable set of customer prompts. Visibility without measurement quickly turns into anecdote.

A Practical 30-Day Reset

Week 1: remove or downgrade every tactic in your roadmap that depends on a secret “AI ranking factor”. Audit crawlability and indexability instead.

Week 2: identify five high-value pages that currently repeat generic advice. Add practitioner insight, examples, limitations and current primary sources.

Week 3: reconcile organisation details, author information, service descriptions and structured data. Test markup and fix contradictions.

Week 4: establish a baseline in Search Console, GA4 and a small prompt set. Record what is confirmed, what is inferred and what remains unavailable in your account.

The emerging search landscape deserves serious work. It does not require magical thinking.
